This past Christmas I was trying to decide what I could get my Mom and siblings. I decided I wanted it to be something more personal and meaningful than the normal presents. I’ve never been big on traditional scrapbooking, but I’ve been digital scrapbooking since before it was cool. So this year I took some photos that I thought would have meaning and good memories and made them each a personal photo collage.

Mom

For Mom I decided to use a photo we got a couple years ago of all her grand-kids together. The photo was almost two years old, but it represented the last time all her grand-kids were together in one place. Since my brother’s oldest lives with his mom in Utah, and me and my son live in Utah, it’s not that often we are all together at one time. Two summers ago I drove out there for several weeks and my nephew was able to come with me. So not only does this photo represent all her grand-kids, it brings back happy memories of all of us together again for a short time.

Stephanie

When I was deciding what memory to preserve for my sister, Stephanie, I remembered that we had done a photo shoot at the local park with her kids and her dog right before the dog passed away. She had that dog more than 13 years and was very attached to her. I took one of the photos of her and the dog that I thought was such a beautiful picture. She loved it so much she cried. Not only that, her youngest son cried too. It was a bittersweet moment.

Brandon and Christine

For my brother and sister-in-laws’s collage, I decided to go with a family theme. I’ve always loved the saying “All because two people fell in love” and wanted to do something around that theme. Several months before they had visited me in Utah and happened to have copied their SD card from their digital camera to my computer. So I had lots of their own family photos to choose from. Including this awesome shot of my brother with the kids on the beach.

Amber

And last, but certainly not least, for Amber’s collage she’s the sentimental type anyway, so I went through my photos and chose a collection that I knew would mean something to her. A little bit of several moments in time. Finding the love of her life, hanging out with her kids, and dancing with Dad…oh I can’t forget the photo of her and Dad comparing bellies. We weren’t sure who was due first.

My unbreakable rules for choosing a domain are:

No hyphens. Been there. Done that. Regret it to this day.

No numbers. Do I spell it out “five” or is it the number “5??

Nothing difficult to spell. Although I once was really excited about using a domain with the word “catalyst” in it — I found that no one could spell the darned thing.

Domain must end in .com. I don’t bother with other endings.

Domain must NOT have any copyright names in it. I would not recommend using “Google”, “Disney”, or any other company name in your URL or prepare to be “ceased and desisted”.

If I’m looking to sell the site down the road, it must be generic enough. For instance, I wouldn’t buy “NicoleKnowsFootball.com” to talk about my favorite football team if I planned to sell the site ever, because I’d have to find someone named Nicole – or who wanted to call themselves that — to buy it.

And my big, bad unbreakable rule.

It must pass the Oprah test.

What exactly is the Oprah test? Well, I picture Oprah saying it out loud. “Today I have with me, Nicole Dean, author of Blah blah blah and owner of NicoleontheNet.com”. Is it memorable? Easy to spell?

It’s not just the Oprah test, though. It’s the Willie Crawford test, too. If I’m in an interview with Willie Crawford and he introduces me – I want people typing or writing down my URL easily – and remembering it long after the fact.

You can’t do that with MyNumber1-BestHome-Remedy-Treatments4New-Mothers.net.

Why is this Important?

A difficult domain is actually wasted opportunity and wasted traffic slipping through your fingers. If you’re promoting via audio or video (in webinars, iTunes interviews, on BlogTalkRadio, live radio, TV, or even your own podcast) – you need a domain that is EASY to remember. It has to make it into the person’s ears and to his brain and stick.

Plus, honestly, it’s a credibility issue. Would you really buy something from MyNumber1-BestHome-Remedy-Treatments4New-Mothers.net? I hope you wouldn’t even think of getting out your credit card for a site like that. SCARY. And would you feel comfortable referring it to your friends? Not a chance.

What impression is your domain giving of you?

How to Avoid the REALLY Bad “Oh My GOSH I CAN’T BELIEVE I DID THAT” Web Domain Names?

I’ll also touch on avoiding really bad ones.

Oftentimes when you search for domains you read what you want to see. I recommend you type the domain in all capital letters and show it to a friend before buying. For instance, ending a word with “s” before the word “expert” can all of a sudden be misinterpreted.

So, I’ll give you the same advice as I give my friends who are expecting a baby. Run the name by your most juvenile, dirty-minded friends – before signing on the dotted line. You’d be amazed at how something totally innocent can go bad in a big hurry.

I hope this has been helpful. I look forward to seeing YOU on Oprah!

I’m always running across articles about Comic Sans and most of them, as far as I can remember all of them, that I found mention that most designers do not like Comic Sans. Apparently it’s made fun of. A lot. A quick Twitter search showed all but one post (well at least the ones that were in English so I could understand them) were not a fan of Comic Sans.

My name is Shannon, and I like Comic Sans.

I mean really, I feel like I should join a support group because apparently I’m the only one who does like it.

I’m not saying I use it on everything, or even on much of anything really. But it does have its uses. And it does have its purpose. The challenge seems to be using it when appropriate, especially in business settings where somebody in the office is drafting something up using a Microsoft Office product real quick. This site gives a quick and amusing explanation of when to use and when not to use this beloved font.

Also to be noted, apparently a recent Princeton study has said that information presented in an easy font is hard to remember and retain than a more challenging font. Of course, I haven’t been able to find an actual article with these findings just two blog type posts mentioning the study and worried about the impact that will have on the eReaders such as Kindle.

The lesson? Doesn’t look like you should create anything you want people to remember for the long term in Comic Sans.

My grandma is dying and it’s only a matter of time now. I’m trying to raise some quick cash to get Andrew and I to California before she passes. My reasons are two-fold. Obviously for myself and my child to have that closure, but also my mom will be there Saturday and I really feel like I need to be there for her. She’s not handling this well at all. Even though Grandma is in her 80s, it’s never easy to lose a parent. Even if you know it’s coming. Even if they’ve lived a long life. Even if you know they are ready to meet Jesus.

(7 minutes and 35 seconds)
The Adobe Photoshop lasso and crop tools are the tools that you’ll use to take people and objects out of regular pictures and put into your minisite designs. I’m sure you’ve seen headers with people or objects in them right? We’ll that’s where the lasso tool and crop tools come into play. So you’ll learn what they can do for you, but most importantly how to use them correctly.

Do you remember looking at a picture and saying to yourself, nice picture, it’s looks right. Or maybe you thought, “that picture doesn’t look right”.
Video#6: How to Create a Minisite Header
(11 minutes and 14 seconds)
Here’s the fun part. You were shown videos 1-5 for a reason, that is, to help you understand the basic fundamental concepts before you got started creating the actual designs. The best part, is that you can take videos 1-5 and apply them to other things besides just minisites!
